A second image from last Saturday evening's adventure at Marshall Beach. I liked this image for its calmness, although in reality the ocean was roaring and I was getting soaked repeatedly! The long exposure captured a lot of the remaining light in the sky, although it was pretty dark by the time I took this - you can tell by the illuminated roadway lights on the Bridge and the headlights in the Headlands.

Marshall Beach is a challenging and dramatic place to shoot. There are lots of interesting boulders, and composing them is almost like fitting together a puzzle. The beach is steeply pitched, so keeping balance in the composition is important to avoid "vertigo". Most importantly, while shooting you need to keep at least one eye on the surf at all times, because it is sneaky and the waves here can be treacherous. Be safe! I had a couple of spotters with me - thanks Tim and Summer! - but I still got absolutely soaked. It was worth it though! I'll post a few more from this shoot and I'm sure I'll go back and face the ocean here again, as it's such a wild and mesmerizing place. Hopefully there will be a few clouds in the sky next time, although I did love the soft light that the hazy Saturday evening sky afforded. There are a lot of incredible images from this location on Flickr. Does anyone else have a Marshall Beach story to share?

This was the sunrise that followed the total lunar eclipse moonset last December. After the moon sunk into the murky haze, I headed across the Bridge to the Headlands. The haze created some interesting color in the sky and allowed for a sweet little sunburst through the South Tower.

This sunrise was incredible, and went on for at least an hour. I wish I'd had a bit more of a reflection, but I do love the textured ripples in the water reflecting the pink sky.

I am SO glad I woke up this morning. I am not fantastic at early mornings, particularly on a day off, and especially when I'm 40 minutes away from a shooting location (couldn't they have built another bridge from Berkeley to the Golden Gate? C'mon, it would have been a great idea!)

I was headed straight for the Headlands to catch the barest crescent of the last day's moon - can you see it? You have to look closely - the moon's disk is only 3% illuminated.

The moonrise was fantastic, and then this incredible sunrise lasted nearly an hour!

So thank you, San Francisco, for the early Christmas present.

And by the way, this is straight. out. of. the. camera. I only applied sharpening. That's how good the sunrise was!

This is a photo from much earlier in the year - the day it was supposed to snow in San Francisco. I woke up well before sunrise and was on my way to Twin Peaks to try to catch an image of the Golden Gate with a snowy Mt. Tam in the background, but no dice. Not one flake.

So I stopped off at Treasure Island for a quick pano with the cold front hovering over the city. For some reason, the Transamerica light was on before sunrise. Maybe someone accidentally hit the switch?

Taken just before the fully eclipsed moon slipped into the hazy murk as the sky brightened with dawn twilight.

I also took a shot that other photographers will appreciate - Crissy Field, packed with dozens and dozens of tripods! I imagine many of us have identical shots, but I don't like the shot any less for it - it was an amazing sight!

It was a fantastically clear evening on Saturday, and I snapped a few images of last light on downtown SF while waiting for the holiday lights to come on (more to come).

It was pretty windy up at the top of Twin Peaks, and I had some trouble keeping the heavy long lens steady, but I ended up with a few crisp shots.

I woke up on Saturday in the best mood. I think the holiday spirit has gotten ahold of me.

How could it not, with the incredible weather we had this weekend in San Francisco?

Today was actually the first time I'd ever been to the top of Coit tower. As some other locals, I've held onto the fact that I haven't done some of the most touristy things in SF with pride. I still have never been to Alcatraz. But now I have been to the top of Coit Tower. And it's amazing up there. Who knew that the top of the tower is completely open?? Word to the wise - no tripods allowed. Mine had to be coat-checked in the gift shop.

Lands End might be my favorite place to watch the sunset in San Francisco. The light has a glowing quality from catching the seaspray that is truly beautiful. Add in the drama of the twisted cypresses and the colorful native plants and flowers and you have a backdrop perfect for framing a Pacific sunset.

Summer finally busted onto the scene this weekend, with tons of gorgeous, warm sunshine. After a day soaking in the rays, we headed to the Tiburon hills to take in the views. Saturday afternoon's surprise storm serendipitously broke up right at sunset. I had wanted to create an image in this location with some interesting weather, so I beelined to Alamo Square. I love the warm light on the downtown buildings and the texture in the clouds.

I've lived in the Bay Area for almost all of my 28 years and I had never been to Fort Point until last week. What a beautiful place. It's also one of the oldest structures in the Bay Area: construction started in 1853 and was built to guard against French and Spanish ships that might be after California's gold.

It was actually slated for destruction when the Golden Gate Bridge was built, but Joseph Strauss, the chief engineer, redesigned the bridge and incorporated the fort in its construction, which in the end saved it from destruction.

The result is this graceful arch under the South Tower, which I think is one of the most beautiful parts of the Bridge.

This much-touristed viewpoint of the Bridge doesn't get nearly enough photography love. I really like the arch over Fort Point and the Headlands background from this perspective.

Last Friday's sunset was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. Fast-moving, interesting-shaped clouds caught some great light over the northwest corner of San Francisco.

Amazing video of San Francisco, shot just days before the 1906 earthquake

This story is a couple of years old, but I just ran across it. I think it's one of the most beautiful videos I've ever seen, and I was incredibly moved while watching it. It connects me with the history of San Francisco in a way that I've never felt before. I wonder about all of the people walking Market Street, most unaware that they are being recorded. Who is the little boy who pops his head out of the car? Where did he live? What was his experience of the earthquake just days later? Did he live to tell his grandchildren about the days of horses and carriages on Market Street and the great earthquake and fire of 1906?

The story behind it -- that it was made just days before the 1906 earthquake -- makes it even more special. And the other story behind it -- how historians determined that it was in fact filmed in April 1906 -- is also extremely interesting. Enjoy, and I hope you fall in love with San Francisco even more deeply.

Here's more information on David Kiehn's incredible sleuthing from the SFGate Blog:

The film was shot by early San Francisco film innovators the Miles Brothers and has been widely available through the Library of Congress and You Tube (which has a novel version set to an Air soundtrack) and was originally dated to the fall of 1905 but recently local author and silent film historian David Kiehn made some surprising discoveries about its date. He had seen "A Trip Down Market Street" many times over the years but it was only around 2005 that he managed to get ahold of a 16mm print which made him "all the more curious about it." The Library of Congress had researched and dated the filming to September or October of 1905. Per Kiehn, "some thought it was shot earlier in 1904 but since the Library of Congress had narrowed it down to that point everyone thought that it was shot in 1905." Read the Library of Congress' description of the film's date here.

At first Kiehn was just trying to confirm the 1905 shoot date so he thought "gee, there were 5 newspapers in San Francisco at that time so somebody must have written about it." He dug through the San Francisco Public Library's collection of microfilm starting with August of 1905 and running through October 1905. He went "page by page and couldn't find a single thing about it so I looked at the film again more closely and I noticed that there were puddles in the cavities by the rails on the street and especially at the end of the film autos drive through puddles splashing water." So, he went back to the papers and checked the weather reports for the period only to find that September and October of 1905 were "as dry as a bone."

Kiehn took a look at the angle of the sun and narrowed the time of year to late March or April 1906. Then he examined the buildings along Market Street, the state of construction narrowed the window down to late 1905 or before the earthquake in 1906. To tie all these pieces together he "went back to the papers to look for information on filming and weather reports. In March and April, especially late March 1906, there was a lot of rain but there weren't any references to any filming being done." But, "being a film historian I then realized that there was a theatrical magazine where filmmakers of the day advertised their films called the New York Clipper. The San Francisco Public Library coincidentally has that magazine on microfilm so I looked at late March and April of 1906."

In the April 28th edition he saw an ad by the Miles Brothers for two films that they were just releasing called "A Trip down Mount Tamalpais" and "A Trip down Market Street." The ad appeared ten days after the April 18, 1906 earthquake but Kiehn notes that this wasn't someone playing games with history. Since print publications required a long lead time for composition it was most likely composed by April 18th, 1906. The films were shot on or around April 12th and shipped to New York on April 17th, the eve of the quake.

That would appear to confirm the date for the film but Kiehn dug deeper by dating the early license plates on cars in the film. The DMV told him that the records no longer existed but he found them in the California State Archives in Sacramento. He eventually found one of the plate numbers from the film, 4867, and traced it to a Jay Anway who registered his car in early 1906 which further verified his research.

There are many other twists and turns along the way to confirming the film's date. Kiehn has written up the entire tale in the most recent issue of the Argonaut.

Kiehn has managed to get the IMDB to change their date for the film but the Library of Congress hasn't updated theirs yet. He hopes they'll come around soon.

Watching this fog spectacle at the Bridge was pretty surreal. I was standing in filtered sunshine in near silence, watching the cars come and go into nothingness. The Bridge cast a seemingly three-dimensional shadow into the fog. Amazing.

The image looks a bit grainy, but that's actually not an artifact - it's due to heat distortion from the sun burning the fog off.

Even though I grew up in Marin, I'd never visited Olompali State Park, which is an interesting mix of hiking trails and building ruins that were built over a period of 150 years.

I checked it out last weekend and was pleasantly surprised to find a trail of wild calla lilies meandering through a meadow, growing over a streamlet. So pretty!

This might look like it Colorado, but it was actually taken in the Eastern Sierra this past fall. I repeated the image and stitched it for a hotel client, who will be hanging a 6' print of it in their elevator lobby. I like the resulting subtle repetition in the image. I also pulled out more greens than the original image had, since the client was interested in spring greens and this was taken in October.

Debleena & Miki: San Francisco Engagement

I had the pleasure of photographing Debleena and Miki's engagement in San Francisco last weekend. Despite the chilly wind, we had a lot of fun - thanks, Debleena, for being such a trooper! I love how comfortable they are with each other - it made my job really easy.

We started at the Palace of Fine Arts.

I lucked out yesterday evening as the storm broke up right at sunset and the clouds lit up with pink and orange-y red. The not-so-neutral density filter lends a slight magenta cast to the image, which I've kept because I liked it :)

I'd passed by the Sutro Baths for years without knowing they were ever there. Thanks to Flickr, I'd seen some beautiful images made there and finally went to explore last weekend. I found the place so inspiring, with so many interesting angles! It dawned on me that I might have found it so interesting because I haven't seen many images made there, and so I have fewer preconceived postcards in my mind, allowing my mind to wander freely. I still made a few images from this location, which I'd seen before, but I have a bunch of others that I'm excited to share that are (hopefully) somewhat unique.

There was a beautiful, partly cloudy sky overhead, which created the pretty reflections in the water.

Here is another view of sunrise over Iguazu Falls. The platform in the shot looks out onto Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo in Spanish or Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese), a U-shaped, 82-meter-high, 150-meter-wide and 700-meter-long cataract on the Brazil side of the falls.

Hola from Argentina! I just arrived in Buenos Aires after two days spent visiting Iguazu Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world. It's a truly stunning place.

I took this photo right at sunrise from the rooftop of my hotel, the Sheraton, which is in Iguazu National Park. Unfortunately the park is closed to visitors until 8am, so shooting the falls up close at sunrise was out of the question. I do like this wide view, with the mist plume catching the pink/orange glow of the rising sun.

This is a blend of two exposures. The rainforest was just too dark otherwise.

Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 24-70L, f/11 @ .6, ISO 50. I didn't bring a tripod with me on this trip, so instead I balanced the camera on the rooftop using a small towel and used mirror lockup.

I loved the glowing, golden light last Monday afternoon at Fort Mason. I didn't realize that Fort Mason was up on a hill until I took this photo. If you look closely, you can see the Point Bonita lighthouse framed in the Golden Gate Bridge arch. This is two images stitched together.

Mt. Tam is incredible for a million reasons, but one of my favorites is the sense of peace and calm on the slopes of Bolinas Ridge. On a balmy summery evening, the only sounds are the gentle breeze rustling the grasses, and the faint sound of surf crashing on the Marin coastline a couple of thousand feet below. With a glowing, pearly moonrise on a July evening, it's perfection.

Note on processing: I usually try to avoid blending exposures (it's a pain!) but with probably 20 stops of dynamic range in this image from the shadowed trees to the bright fog and sky, it was necessary. Other than blending the three exposures in Photoshop, there's minimal processing here... just a bit of curves and a touch of vibrance.

This image turned out much differently than the one I had in mind. Yesterday there was a full moon rise. At least, I think there might have been. It was so cloudy and rainy in California that I doubt many people actually saw it! I had been planning to photograph the moon over Mono Lake for months and even though the weather report didn't look promising, I stubbornly headed over the Sierra anyway. It snowed as we headed over Sonora Pass, and although it wasn't raining in the Mono Basin, the clouds were thick and stormy. The fall colors were absolutely gorgeous, though! I have a few images of the aspens to share soon. I also enjoyed checking out Bodie for the first time.

Long story somewhat short, I gave up on the moonrise and settled for a few ND110 long exposures of the lake during the afternoon, then headed to Lee Vining to watch the Giants game. The only restaurant open in town during the winter had a local watching the Tennessee college football game (!), so I ended up watching the game at the Mobil station at the beginning of the Tioga Pass (which had just closed in the afternoon). It was a surreal experience, especially since there were more Phillies, Dodgers, and Braves fans than Giants fans in the place! What state are we in again?? But the Giants won, much celebration was had, and then a long drive back over the Sierra (the looooong way, nearly up to Tahoe and back down 50).

One of the awesome things about this year's harvest moonrise was that it rose in conjunction with Jupiter, which looks incredibly bright right now since it’s at its closest distance to Earth since 1963.

Every 399 days, Earth and Jupiter come into an astronomical formation called opposition. This month, Earth is nearly directly in a line between the sun and Jupiter.

Here are some more fun facts about Jupiter:

- Jupiter is the fastest spinning planet in the Solar System. Its day is only 10-hours long.
- Jupiter is a gas planet held together by a massive gravity field.
- Jupiter is essentially a sun, but without the nuclear reaction at its core required to produce light.
- Jupiter has been visited seven times by spacecraft from Earth.

I've been looking for this lineup location for about a year. It took me a long time to find it because of the eucalyptus trees in the way! While I'd like a clear view of the Campanile and the San Francisco skyline, I also like the interesting silhouettes of the eucalyptus trees.

It's been HOT here in Berkeley - I think it's 90 degrees today. These hot days make for beautiful balmy evenings, though. I love the Bay Area's indian summer!

Harvest Moonrise over Mt. Diablo: Day 2

The second harvest moonrise was even better than the first! The combination of a later moonrise and a clearer day meant that the moon rose into a gorgeous alpenglow. You can see a few of the sun's last rays illuminating Mt. Diablo.

I took this photo from Grizzly Peak in Berkeley. I love how beautiful and wild the East Bay hills are just minutes from downtown Berkeley. On this evening, things got almost a little too wild, though: as Tim and I hiked out along a seldom-used trail to get to this lookout, we heard some low, intense growls coming from a dense bunch of bushes about 10 yards from the trail. We froze in our tracks, wondering if it were smarter to keep moving along the trail, or turn around and go back. We followed the common advice for mountain lion encounters and made noise and waved our arms (and tripod!) around and kept moving down the trail. Luckily we never saw the possible mountain lion, but I did keep looking over my shoulder as I shot the moonrise!

Stitch's Puppy Portraits

She's sweet and playful and SMART - she already knows to "sit" and "lay down"! She loves giant sticks and her sweet dog bed, which she kept coming back to for a rest after running around in the park!

I love it when the fog is low enough for the skyline to poke up through it. It's been warm here as we start our real summer in the Bay Area. At the end of a warm day last week, heat radiated up off the Bay, causing the distortion you see in the image (which I like -- SF in the fog is like a mirage!)

This past weekend I had the pleasure of shooting Manisha & Rochan's engagement portraits. Originally from the East Coast, they are planning to settle in San Francisco, and so we spent the session checking out some of SF's most beautiful locations, including the Palace of Fine Arts, the Presidio, the Legion of Honor, and Baker Beach. Manisha and Rochan are gorgeous together! Despite an extremely windy day and many outtakes due to blowing hair and wardrobe, I think we got a lot of beautiful images...

My charm from yesterday must have worked! Yesterday evening we had clear skies and the first sunset I've seen in at least a couple of weeks. Luckily for me, it coincided with a beautiful one day old moon set over Mt. Tam. I loved the small foggy clouds moving quickly over Mt. Tam and the earthshine on the new moon's disk. If you look closely in the large version, you can see the lights on at the Mill Valley Air Force Station.

I met this long-tailed macaque at the top of the active Gunung Batur volcano in Bali. WIth the help of a guide, I climbed the volcano to see the sun rise over Lombok, an island to the east, and Gunung Agung, the tallest mountain in Bali.

This monkey took a break from begging for food to check out the sunrise. I loved the way the sunrise light illuminated his golden eyes.

"Taj Mahal Sunrise Reflections"

This image captures one of my favorite moments witnessed along my journey from Delhi to Bali last summer. The night before I took this, a sandstorm howled in Agra, ruining my chances for a sunrise at the Taj Mahal -- or so I thought. The opposite turned out to be true, and the day dawned crystal clear with an incredible sky full of small, puffy clouds. This image was taken just after sunrise.

I can't resist golden light + Golden Gate.

The Land's End trail is one of the best places in San Francisco to take a walk at sunset. There's a beautiful peace and serenity there that I absolutely love.

A few weeks ago I headed down the coast to camp out at Andrew Molera State Park -- a wonderful spot! On my way home on Sunday morning, I stopped to check out the famous Garrapata sea stacks. They're beautiful, but the ocean was calmer than I've ever seen it, so the dramatic image I had in mind wasn't really possible. I went with a long exposure to take advantage of the gentle waves lapping the stony shoreline.

Updating from Bangalore! I haven't taken any photos in India yet, so I'm sharing one from a few months back. I took this before shooting the Golden Gate Bridge lineup at sunset. It was a beautiful, clear afternoon and I love the color reflected by the buildings in the skyline, contrasting with the blues and greens of the bay and headlands.

I think it's really interesting how the telephoto compression shows the arch of the Golden Gate Bridge's roadway.

I nabbed this shot after a somewhat disappointing sunset on Tuesday evening.

On Friday night I escaped to Big Sur for a quick camping trip. The trip was more of a getaway than a photography excursion, but that's never stopped me from taking pictures before :)

The weather was miserable all the way down, but the marine layer cleared right over Big Sur as I arrived at Andrew Molera State Park. The bright sunshine felt great, but isn't really ideal for photographing moody Big Sur. So I broke out the ND110 to do some long-exposure experiments.

This view is looking back up the coast from the McWay Cove overlook.

Big, puffy clouds are a rarity in the Bay Area, and I enjoyed watching them last week as one of the last El Nino spring storms moved through the Bay. I took this image just before sunset as I waited for the full moon to rise behind the Golden Gate.

San Francisco Moonset

This image finally happened.

I've been envisioning this one since I moved to the Berkeley Hills last July. For every full moonset since then, the moon has been too far north or south, the weather hasn't worked, or I've been out of town. This morning, everything aligned, including one of the clearest mornings I've seen from the Berkeley Hills.

The first light of sunrise is just touching the skyline in this image, but just 10 minutes earlier there was a beautiful alpenglow and the moon looked like a giant luminous pearl in the sky. It wasn't quite close enough to the skyline then for the image I wanted, though.

It looks like the weather has cleared up in the Bay Area, hopefully for good. I'm ready for summer!
